People, Keep On Learnin’
Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground” popped into my headphones somewhere between 72d and 42d streets this morning. And while the groove alone was enough to buoy my already lagging spirits, it was all about the refrain.
See, it occurred to me last night that I’d been a real douch bag at least twice during the day. Not malicious, not mean, just kinda’ snappy and snarky. Both examples are work related, so I’ll spare you the details. Suffice to say my mouth was way ahead of my brain (as usual), so much so that my stomach was in knots over how I’d handled it. So much so that I couldn’t sleep. So much so that I woke up at 6 a.m. and emailed the parties in question.
Now, it’s potentially excusable given that yesterday was the second darkest day of the year (today is the darkest). But I’m not going to excuse it. I’m going to do better today.
I’m so darn glad He let me try it again
‘Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin
I’m so glad that I know more than I knew then
Gonna keep on tryin’ till I reach the highest ground
And yes, I did actually start today singing — out loud — “The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow” when I woke up this morning. I mean, yeah, it’s twelve degrees outside and all, and the breeze blowing through my bedroom is strong enough to windsurf in my bathtub. But have you ever seen so many stars? Have you ever seen the sky so blue?
P.S. Don’t worry. I shaved it off almost immediately.
