Top Down, Summer Sorta’ Record

Sheryl Crow came to work today. She played the cafeteria, I shit you not. It was like a high school assembly. But with Sheryl Crow. Ok, so my day job has occasional perks. John Norris was doing some pre-show Q&A and characterized her new album, “C’mon, C’mon,” as a “top down summer sorta’ record.” And I thought, concurrent to the guy next to me, ‘Good song title!’

So I raced home and endeavored to write it in time for rehearsal: an optimistic, open-sounding summer song. A cruising song. None of this “Summer’s gone away / Everything left to decay” shit. No, something happy, something positive.

Meet “Top Down.”

You’ve been waiting on The King
And I can’t wait another day
To pack our things and get away, far away
I’ve got the top down, and the radio
And I’m coming to get you
I’ve got two tickets to a rock show
Yeah we’re gonna’ get through
Saturday’s just fine by me
I’ve been saving up all week
I can’t wait until we’re free, finally free
I’ve got the top down, and the radio
And I’m coming to get you
I’ve got two tickets to a rock show
Yeah we’re gonna’ get through

Bridge, solo, repeat chorus — you get the idea. 2:38 on the minidisc!

So fueled on plain instant oatmeal, water and a rogue codeine to squash some neck pain (thanks Continental Airlines), I’m off to rehearsal to see if Tony, Paul and Filipe can pick it up in time for Saturday’s show… you won’t wanna’ miss it!
